Personality Disorders

Welcome to our Personality Disorders self-help page. Here we explore what personality disorders are, possible causes and how you can access support and treatment. We also share guidance for family and friends and tips for helping yourself

What are Personality Disorders?

If you have a personality disorder, you may think, feel and behave in ways which are significantly different from others. These differences can make life extremely challenging in ways such as:

Becoming emotionally overwhelmed by negative feelings or feeling emotionally disconnected

Becoming socially isolated and experiencing difficulty in maintaining stable, close relationships with others

Feeling that you need to supress your emotions through the abuse of substances such as alcohol or drugs

Stress can aggravate the symptoms of personality disorder. Most people find their symptoms begin to emerge in adolescence and may be due to experiences such as childhood abuse and neglect.

The following leaflets will help explain what personality disorder is, the different types, what causes it, treatment, self-care and information for friends and family
