This is a statutory service established under the Mental Health Act which ensures safeguards for people who are subject to restrictions under the act. It helps eligible patients understand their rights, express their views, and take part in decisions about their care and treatment
You have a legal right to support from an IMHA if you are detained under the Mental Health Act, subject to a Community Treatment Order (CTO) or Guardianship, a conditionally discharged restricted patient, or an informal patient considering certain serious treatments for a mental disorder.
Ensuring your voice is heard when it matters most.
Havering Community and Statutory Advocacy Service provides free, independent and confidential advocacy. We support people to understand their rights, express their views, and be involved in decisions that affect their lives. Our advocates work alongside individuals to ensure their voice is heard and respected.
What an IMHA will do:
- Help you access and understand information about mental health legislation, any conditions or restrictions that apply to you, and your rights.
- Help you obtain information about and understand your medical treatment (such as medication and therapies).
- Support you to be involved in planning your care and treatment.
- Support you to apply for, prepare for, and attend Hospital Managers’ Hearings and Mental Health Review Tribunals, and understand the decisions made.
- Discuss aftercare arrangements and help you access support and services.
- Help you raise concerns about your care, treatment, and support.
